Overview of the existance gear
Alice intrduced the idea of seperate existance gear. Basicaly anything you would not need for imediate fighting would go on a rucksack. In alice there are Medium and Large packs that could be configured with or without the frame. (The small pack was dropped before adoption). The frame also could be used seperately with a cargo shelf for bulky items without need to find a special packboard. In IIFS there is a field and a patrol pack. These packs could be mated together to make one pack.
For all the packs there are camo covers that can be slipped on to match the desert uniforms, snow parka, or to cover the green pack with woodland camo.

These packs are cheap and very handy. They have more webbing them the large pack for all sorts of Alice pouches. The earlier ones have more grommets in the webbing for the old wire hook items as well, plus they have a pocket meant for the old AN/PRC-25 and AN/PRC-77 radios. As Radios got smaller this pocket went away. You can use with just the shoulder straps for light loads or put it on a frame for heavier loads, particularly if you load up the webbing with canteens and your entrenching tool.

This pack you will most certainly want to put on the frame, because if you fill this big pack it's going to be heavy. The only downside to it actually has less webbing for pouches

These are the various straps for the Alice frame and packs. The shoulder straps can attach to just the pack or to the frame, the rest only work with the frame
Some of the straps have various revisions of buckles and some are equiped with a couple different quick releases to get out of the pack

Mixed reviews on this. First it tends to be expensive because production was lower then the Alice packs and it's an internal frame pack and it's valued by hikers and backpackers. The unique two piece nature of this is a nice feature, but in that lies one of it's bigger faults. The field pack has a whole ladder of webbing for Alice pouches, but if you put the Patrol pack on the patrol pack promptly blocks all this webbing! Still the seperatable nature of this is a big plus.

Older Nylon rucksacks
Various rucksacks had been around for a while if something more then a butt pack was needed. A few were made in Nylon for the Vietnam War. All these listed bellow are now expensive collectibles and the Alice packs are excellent and too cheap to use these. They are therefore listed for completeness sake only.

This is the fore runner of the Alice medium pack. Only it has an integrated X steel frame.
LIGHTWEIGHT RUCKSACK 8465-00-782-3248
Now here you can see the fore runner of the Alice frame system, the pack could come off and there was a shelf that could go on as well just like Alice. The pack itself is much smaller, and could represent what the dropped Small Alice Rucksack 8465-00-001-6479 might have looked like
